Our civic education program Learning by Hearings is growing and we are looking for a Civic Education Specialist to join our team! 

The Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy is searching for an experienced Civic Education Specialist  at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

  • Helps to lead the development of the Levin Center’s civic education curriculum and extracurricular materials, known as Learning by Hearings. Researches opportunities to deploy those education materials in classrooms and after-school settings, securing adoption and use of those materials by educational programs in Michigan and throughout the country, and providing direct assistance and support to teachers and administrators using the Learning by Hearing materials. Reports to Director, Levin Center.
  • Promotes Levin Center civic education materials to relevant audiences, including institutions of secondary education. Relates content to education standards & objectives, explains the value of using Levin Center civic education materials and demonstrates to prospective audiences why the Levin Center’s oversight curriculum is an excellent addition to any high school classroom.
  • Researches, writes, and edits educational content for the Levin Center’s Learning by Hearings after-school program. The program offers high school students an opportunity to experience outside of school what it is like to conduct fact-based, bipartisan oversight hearings via partnerships with the YMCA’s Youth & Government programs and other student enrichment programs. Researches and drafts an annual oversight scenario, including creating supporting documentation for running a successful program. Seeks out opportunities for growth of after-school programming and facilitates the sale of the material.
  • Researches, writes, and edits content for the Levin Center’s Learning by Hearings classroom content and resources. The Levin Center is drafting content modules, resources, and lesson plans for use in high school Civics and US History classrooms that focus on experiential education with topics inspired by the Center’s online Portraits in Oversight content. Assists in developing this content and ensuring that it meets relevant state standards.
  • Provides teacher and organization consulting and professional learning opportunities. Assists teachers and organizations with running civic education programs. Must offer constructive feedback and assist with program or lesson administration.
